Directly across from the hill that
bears the cemetery there is a turn
out for two historical markers -
neither one regards the asylum or
the remaning cemetery.
One marker discusses the
Augustana College School on
Wheels which was briefly located
in the old asylum buildings and the
other covers the Norwegian Ski
Hill.
At one time Harold Ironshield
and the Native American Reburial
Restoration Committee had begun
the process of attempting to
obtain a historical marker for this
location. Due to illness, Harold's
dream of the marker and a
monument were never realized.
We at the Friends of Hiawatha
Foundation feel that the goal of a
historical marker is a valid one and
have begun taking steps towards
the acquisition of just such a sign.
A historical marker in the state of South Dakota costs
approximately $2,020.00. If the marker is placed along
a state road the Department of Transportation will
provide $150.00 towards the cost of the sign. We
have set a goal of $2300.00 to go towards the marker
and began collecting donations in July 2008.
It is our goal to have the marker placed on the turn
out with the other two markers. January 2009 marks
the 75th Anniversary of the closing of the asylum. We
would like to have the marker placed some time
before the end of 2009.
Please consider donating and help us in making
sure that the patients of the Hiawatha Asylum are
appropriately acknowledged.
